🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Selling in Scotland? Scottish pieces may carry the Edinburgh Assay Office castle town mark. Note that the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 applies in England & Wales; in Scotland, metal-dealer licensing sits under the Air Weapons and Licensing (Scotland) Act 2015, administered by local authorities. Factual context only — not legal advice.

How the silver calculator works

The maths is simple and we show all of it. For each piece we take your weight, convert it to grams, multiply by the standard's fineness to get the pure-metal content, then multiply by the live silver price per gram:

melt = grams × fineness × (spot price per troy oz ÷ 31.1035)

That melt figure is where nearly every other UK calculator stops. But no dealer pays 100% of melt on silver — margins are proportionally larger than on gold because the metal value per item is lower. So we apply your chosen realistic payout percentage to show what you're actually likely to receive. Sterling (925) is the most common scrap standard; weigh out any non-silver fittings first.
