How to read a UK hallmark
A full UK hallmark has three compulsory parts plus optional marks:
- Sponsor's mark — the maker or company that submitted the item.
- Fineness (standard) mark — a number in an shaped surround showing purity in parts per thousand: e.g.
750= 18ct gold,925= sterling silver,950= platinum,500= palladium. - Assay office mark — which office tested it: London (leopard's head), Birmingham (anchor), Sheffield (rose), and Edinburgh (three-towered castle).
