Timing
Is Now a Good Time to Sell Gold in the UK? (Updated Regularly)
Nobody can reliably predict the gold price — so anyone who tells you exactly when to sell is guessing. What you can do is make a sensible, informed decision. Here's a practical framework, plus where to check the real numbers. We refresh this guidance as the market moves.
First, check where the price actually is
Start with facts, not headlines. Our gold price history shows the live level plus today-vs-yesterday and 10-day, 30-day, 3-month, 6-month and 1-year trends in GBP. Gold in sterling has trended strongly upward over recent years, but it moves in both directions — look at the actual chart before deciding.
Three questions that matter more than the chart
- Why are you selling? If it's to clear clutter or you need the money, the "perfect" price is far less important than getting a fair payout now.
- Is it scrap or investment? Broken/unwanted jewellery: sell when convenient — you're realising metal value either way. Bullion held as an investment: timing matters more, so watch the trend.
- Can you wait? If yes, you have the luxury of setting a target and watching. If no, focus on getting the best realistic payout today rather than the best possible price ever.
Selling into a rising market
When prices are high, more sellers appear and buyers compete — a good moment to get quotes. But a high spot price still doesn't mean a dealer pays 100% of melt: the payout percentage matters just as much as the headline price. A great rate on today's price often beats a poor rate on a slightly higher one next month.
A simple plan
- Value your pieces on the calculator (melt + realistic payout).
- Check the trend on the history page.
- If you can wait and the trend is your friend, set a mental target and a price alert.
- When you sell, compare buyers by % of melt — that's where the real money is won or lost.
Timing the market is hard; getting a fair payout is entirely within your control.
All figures are estimates of melt value, never offers. Not financial or tax advice.
